This weekend’s match isn’t about kicking an opposition club while it’s down. It is simply about winning a game of football and pushing hard for a final-eight berth. That was the message from Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy this afternoon. Sheedy would have nothing of talk that this weekend will provide Essendon with an ideal opportunity to hurt an arch-rival while it was down. “We just have to win and force our way into the final eight – this game is about nothing more than that,” Sheedy said.

Carlton has suffered heavy losses in the past three weeks going down to West Coast by more than 100 points before losing to Sydney and Collingwood. But the Bombers have heard this all before and been beaten. You can throw the form guide out the window when it comes to Essendon / Carlton games. Sheedy said the Bombers would be wary of the changing face of the Carlton side.

“They (Carlton) are the reason we are outside the eight. We lost when we played them in Round 3 this season and we have got to make up for that,” he said. “They have got some new players in the side – they have had some players retire. We have just got to work hard on playing our best footy like we did last week – I thought that was a good solid win.”

“We have got five or six new players and we are trying to get somewhere ourselves – we have been stuck in the middle (of the ladder) for much of this year. Collingwood have clawed their way up the ladder and that is what we have to do.”

Sheedy confirmed captain James Hird would return to the side this weekend. Andrew Welsh will definitely miss this week and probably one more.

Sheedy also had a dig at Channel 9 after it apparently forgot to set up down-the-ground cameras for last Sunday’s game between Collingwood and Carlton at the MCG. As a result there was no footage of alleged incidents involving Anthony Rocca and Mick Martyn and a separate incident involving Brodie Holland and Scott Camporeale.

“We got our down the ground tape from the Melbourne game and its been a pretty good tape … others go missing,” he quipped.
