Essendon Football Club will wear ‘Bushfire Appeal – 1800 811 700’ as its shorts logo in Friday night’s fund-raising game at the Dome.

Essendon managing director, Peter Jackson, said the Club hoped this branding on the players’ shorts would encourage Australian’s to give freely to the cause.

The coaches’ box signage will also display the Bushfire Appeal information.

“The Victorian bushfires have taken an enormous toll on so many Victorians,” Jackson said. “We have all been shocked by the events that have unfolded.

“The circumstances surrounding this game are tragic. We are pleased to have the opportunity to play a part in assisting those who have been affected by the fires this Friday night.

“Australia is a generous society and when Australians are in need we dig deep and do everythingwe can to help those who are less fortunate - I hope fans of all clubs support the AFL’s initiative this Friday night.

“Our game and this Club only exists because of the support of the community and as such we have an absolute responsibility to support that community.”

To further support the Bushfire Appeal, Essendon will:

  • Auction each players’ shorts and signed guernsey from Friday’s match on the club website – essendonfc.com.au,
  • Essendon Football Club in conjunction with the Telstra Dome will donate 25% of all money spent at Beyond Sport – the retail outlet at The Dome - to the Bushfire Appeal,
  • Provide players (not involved in the game) to be involved in fundraising activities around the ground,
  • Incorporate fundraising initiatives into Essendon’s Family Day at Windy Hill on 22 February.
  • Add a $1 surcharge to each meal at the Windy Hill Venue for February with money raised going to the Bushfire Appeal. A gold coin donation will also be collected as part of their daily morning and afternoon tea services.

“We will also continue to work with the Bendigo community and its leaders to determine how best to provide support for them,” Jackson said.

“Clearly we have a significant link with that community through the Bendigo Bombers but also through our On the Ball program that we have run in secondary schools in the region for the past six years.”
