Brisbane has taken over top spot on the ladder after a 141-point victory against Adelaide boosted their percentage. With St Kilda, Melbourne, Port Adelaide and Geelong also recording wins, the fight is still alive for the McClelland Trophy. The race for the remaining positions in the top eight is also still on with Fremantle, Sydney, Kangaroos, Essendon and West Coast all in the mix.

Fraser Gehrig and Nick Riewoldt starred up forward in St Kilda’s 35-point defeat of Essendon on Friday night at The Dome. The undermanned Essendon defence could not contain the pair who kicked 15 goals between them. Down the other end Bomber spearhead Matthew Lloyd performed admirably. He kicked six goals to take his tally to 72 for the season.

It wasn’t a surprise result on Saturday at the MCG when the Kangaroos easily accounted for the dismal Hawks. The Kangaroos were in control all afternoon and skipped out to a five-goal lead at the first change. They continued to outscore Hawthorn in each quarter to run out 80-point winners.

Fremantle kept its hopes alive for a top four finish with a win against Sydney at Subiaco on Saturday. Jeff Farmer and Justin Longmuir dominated up forward, booting nine goals between them. Barry Hall and Michael O’Loughlin contributed three majors each for the visitors, but it wasn’t enough to get the Swans across the line. Fremantle won comfortably by 27-points.

The Brisbane Lions recorded their biggest victory for the season with a 141-point win over Adelaide. The Lions booted 21-goals to two after half-time to demolish Adelaide. The massive win has seen Brisbane take over top spot on the ladder. Alistair Lynch booted six goals for the victors.

Collingwood returned to the winner’s list with a solid win over the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night. Only two goals separated the teams at the final change, but Collingwood turned it on in the final term. They booted eight goals to one to win comfortably by 49-points.

Port Adelaide posted its sixth consecutive victory yesterday at AAMI Stadium. Port got off to a great start and held a 32-point advantage at the major change. Warren Tredrea continued his outstanding season with another six goal haul in his team’s 26-point victory.

Geelong proved that they are the real deal this season with a comprehensive win against Carlton yesterday at The Dome. The Cats have won 10 of its past 12 matches and sit one game clear in fifth position on the ladder. It was Geelong’s small forwards that turned it on yesterday – Paul Chapman and Gary Ablett junior booted seven goals between them.

Melbourne easily accounted for Richmond yesterday at the MCG. The Demons had winners all over the ground to comfortably win by 56-points. David Neitz starred up forward and finished with six goals for the math. The victory was soured with a knee injury to Peter Vardy. He is expected to miss the next month.
