Matthew Knights today publicly laid down the law to Andrew Lovett saying 2009 is time for him to step-up and not simply be a ""bit player"" in the team.

""He has a better understanding that his impact is important to the team and he can’t just be a bit player anymore,"" Knights said.

""He has to be one of the ones that play on a consistent basis at a high level. I think he is grasping that and I will keep pushing him towards that.""

Speaking to media today, Knights said he and Lovett spoke just yesterday about how the club and Lovett nearly parted during trade week

""We had a good discussion and spoke about the last three or four months and went right back to trade week and since and how he has endeavoured to put his best foot forward at all times.

""He's really proud of his last three of four months and so he should be. We went right to the wall in trade week, it could have gone one way or another and it is full testament to an individual to go through that and come back into a group and work hard.

""I am not saying he has achieved everything because the future is what it's all about but he should be proud.

""He has pushed into our midfield and is going to give us another midfield option as well as being able to play up forward. I am a big fan of Andrew Lovett as a footballer but it’s about the whole package, not just being a footballer and he understands that. If he applies himself I think he can slowly get towards being an elite midfielder.""

Knights also supported the new rushed behind rule and infringing on players after they have disposed the ball.

With the season now just two nights away, he admits that playing Port Adelaide interstate is a tough first up assignment but has refused to worry about having some key players - including McVeigh, Welsh, Laycock and Reimers - out injured.

""Port Adelaide played in a grand final 18 months ago and looks to be in good order. They will present a formidable challenge,"" he said.

""They (injuries) are the cards we have been dealt and that just the reality of football. I know one day we have a full list to choose from and I just hope that comes sooner rather than later.

""We are really pleased with our pre-season -I have no complaints going into Round 1, there are no excuses. The new fitness and conditioning staff have done a great job and the players have responded well.""
