Bomber fans are proud of their heritage and the official Essendon website is now home to a brilliant new history section.

Not only is it the first club history section to provide information on every player that has pulled on the red and black guernsey and every game the Club has played, it also asks fans to help the Club build a more complete picture of its history.

Since the club's first VFL game in 1897, 1080 players have played at least one senior game for Essendon, and now supporters can read about all of them and every game the Club has played.

This brand new section enables fans to submit comments and memories on players and games. Who was your favourite player and why? What game stands out in your memory? What obscure fact do you have about a player or game?

It is this contribution from fans that will – over time - help the club create a fantastic historical record for future generations.

From Ted Kinnear, our first 100-game player, to George Rawle who debuted aged 33 in the 1923 grand final, to Matthew Lloyd our all-time record goal kicker, they are all there.

The database has functions that allow you to search by jumper number, years played, previous clubs, even height and weight.

Using Essendon’s archives together with the AFL’s vast archive and help from supporters, the club has carefully assembled information about all the players.

Essendon managing director, Peter Jackson says the launch is timely given it is the 25-year anniversary of the 1984 Premiership – a year that defined this club in so many ways.

“Heritage and Tradition is one of the key pillars of this football club and this new history section is unlike anything any other club has on-line in that it engages the fans,” Jackson said.

“It is timely that we launch this section this year. We have a range of activities the Club will be undertaking to celebrate the wonderful 1984/85 era and we will be releasing those details in due course, suffice to say this certainly adds to it.

“The new history section records all players and games but it also contains a user generated content module where the fans can feed in their thoughts and memories. It will help us create a more robust picture of our history through the eyes of our supporters.

“It will be further developed to also allow supporters to upload any film or vision they have which will further enhance our historical records.

""There are some players that have gone through the club that we don’t have pictures of and this provides the opportunity for relatives, friends or fans to assist us. We wantour supportersto help build the picture of the people and games that have defined this club.
