Champion Essendon ruckman Paul Salmon will head to London tonight with his immediate playing future still undecided. Salmon is a part of the Bombers’ squad heading to England to play in the “Clash of the Sash” match against Richmond at The Oval. Salmon said today that a decision on 2003 was still to be made but added that it was something he would like to have set in stone sooner rather than later.

“I’m looking forward to London and getting away with the team for a week. I have never been to London before and I hear it is worth a look. When I get back from London I will be having my shoulder reconstructed so that is where things are at right now. My shoulder is being done immediately so if I do play on it won't inhibit my pre-season,” Salmon said.

“From a playing perspective I suppose in many ways I am in exactly the same position I was this time last year. I’m in reasonable physical condition and am really happy with the way the body has pulled up but I have said to the club that they should exhaust every avenue they can to get what they need. If they do that and then call me then I will consider that approach at the time.”

Should Salmon retire, the Bombers ruck stocks as they stand consist of Steven Alessio, who struggled with injury for much of 2002, youngster David Hille and rookie Simon O’Keefe. At a pinch Aaron Henneman can also be used in the ruck but that is basically it. The Bombers’ match committee will look closely at what is available but coach Kevin Sheedy re-iterated again on radio this morning that deals wouldn’t be done for the sake of it and he was happy to develop youngsters Hille and O’Keefe.
