Essendon VFL faces a defining period in the next fortnight, as they embark on their run towards a possible finals berth.

The Bombers are currently second on the ladder after playing some brilliant football in the last month, stringing together four consecutive wins.

The Dons face Port Melbourne (6th) and Williamstown (3rd) in the next fortnight, with both matches set to have a considerable bearing on the shaping of the top eight.

“With the next two weeks against Port Melbourne and Williamstown, they’re both sitting in that top four, so it will be a challenge for us to hold that consistency,” said co-Head Coach Paul Corrigan.

“But that’s what you want - you want to be able to play those quality sides and test yourselves against quality opposition,” Corrigan said.

On the back of a 2-3 start to the season, the VFL Dons have resurrected their season by sticking to the team principles, according to Corrigan.

“When you look at the last six weeks to a month, we’ve seen some real improvement and consistency amongst the group that we’ve been aiming for.

“And I think it’s just adapting to the way we want to play, and having trust in that as well.

“The boys have really seen what happens when you stick to it in the last four weeks - the results have shown themselves.”

Corrigan conceeded a positive from the first half of the season has been a number of players getting their chance at AFL level.

“We’ve seen some real improvement in our younger guys and also a lot of guys get opportunities at AFL level.

“And that’s the whole process that we want - to give VFL guys continual improvement in their games and hopefully get a taste of AFL.”
