Essendon has selected Patrick Ryder with its first selection at the NAB AFL Draft this morning. Ryder, selected at number seven, from East Fremantle is a tall forward/ruckman who is strong overhead, has clean hands and is dangerous around goals. After an outstanding debut year in the WAFL, he achieved NAB AFL U18 All-Australian honours and represented the AIS/AFL Academy in Ireland.

With its second pick at number 19, the Bombers have selected Courtney Dempsey from Morningside, Queensland. Originally from Cairns, Dempsey is a medium midfielder/forward with explosive pace and is strong overhead.  His 7.99sec for the AFL Agility run was second fastest overall and the AFL Draft Camp, supporting his uncanny evasive skills.
