Essendon champion, Michael Long, retired from playing AFL earlier this week. In an emotional press conference, Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson thanked Long for his contribution to the Essendon Football Club and making it such a great club. Long fighting off tears, spoke after Jackson - thanking the club for its ongoing support and encouragement and also paying tribute to his supportive family. For Long's speech click below.

Since I have been at the club I have enjoyed every moment of it. I see the next part of my journey with the club – working alongside recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro and fitness coach John Quinn – very exciting. I suppose it was also part of the plan, for life after football, to go into politics, also flying – tours of the Territory, and also being a part of the Essendon Football Club - working with good people, great people. This club is my home, my family and that’s the part I am going to miss the most – but I am still going to be around and you’ll probably get sick of me!

To Kevin, you’ve been fantastic – you’re like a father, almost a grandfather. That’s how I see you. You have taught me so many things about life and about being a good person – that’s what makes a good club and that’s why I want to work at the Essendon Football Club – the people here.

I would like to thank a few people, particularly Beverly Knight. She is on the board at Essendon – they are up for election too. She has got my vote! That is the thing about Essendon – the people. I’ve only ever had good people around me. Beverly is like a mother to me and a very supportive mentor. I would also like to thank her brother Terry – he is a good friend of mine, who has always been there.

To my family – my father Jack. He has been one of the greatest inspirations. A man who is so strong and has so much love - love for people throughout the Territory. That is probably why I am the person I am – I would like to thank him. I would also like thank my brothers and sisters.
