Essendon’s first selection in last year's National Draft, David Myers, will play his first game in the VFL for the Bendigo Bombers this weekend.

Pick number 6 overall, Myers has been recovering from a slight hamstring strain and is now ready to return to football when Bendigo take on a winless Werribee at Bartercard Oval this Sunday.

Bendigo Coach, Adrian Hickmott, has named a largely unchanged lineup to take on the Tigers and said whilst they would wait to see if a few players came up between now and Sunday, Myers was fit and would be in the team.

“Dave Myers will come into the side this weekend and he is looking keen and ready to go,” Hickmott said.

Myers joins a group of Essendon listed first-year players to debut for Bendigo this year and Hickmott has been encouraged by their progress.

“Some of the Essendon listed players are slowly working into it and playing good football. Cale Hooker and Tayte Pears are getting better and better every week,” Hickmott said.

Captain James Flaherty has been in great form in the first two weeks of the season and Hickmott is pleased to see him playing good football with the added pressure of being the team’s leader.

“Flaherty has been fantastic. He was worried about his own game when taking on the captaincy but he has done a great job,” Hickmott said.

Hickmott conceded that North Ballarat putimmense pressure on his young list last weekend but insisted there were positives to come out of the loss.

“North Ballarat put a lot of pressure on us but we were missing targets going back from marks and free-kicks under no pressure at all,"" he said.

""This was a positive because it is something we can change and improve. We came out and trained with purpose and in pressure situations because you cannot afford poor kicking in games.""

Werribee have not begun the season as well as North Ballarat and although they have lost the opening two games by 56 and 53 points, Hickmott will not be underestimating them.

“We can’t underestimate Werribee, they will bounce back. I’ve been coaching for five years and you just can’t underestimate any team, especially at VFL level,” Hickmott said.

Bendigo Bombers play Werribee Tigers at Bartercard Oval, Werribee on Sunday 13 April at 2pm.
