In November 2004 Aboriginal former Essendon champion and AFL legend Michael Long, and prominent Aboriginal Elders, embarked on an historic and remarkable journey, walking from Melbourne to Canberra to meet with Prime Minister John Howard. It was a statement of strength, leadership and inspiration. It was a step towards uniting all Australians.
The support from Indigenous and non-Indigenous people was overwhelming. Most wished they could have walked with him. Now everyone has the opportunity to join Michael in The Long Walk 2005 on Sunday 4 December at Princes Park, Carlton, Victoria.
Help bring about change. Walk with thousands of non-Indigenous and Indigenous Australians to improve everyone’s way of life.

WHY WALK?
By simply registering and walking you can help bring about change.
Your financial contribution will support great Indigenous leaders and enable countless Australians to benefit from their work.
Funds raised by The Long Walk 2005 will go to the Sir Douglas Nicholls Fellowship for Indigenous Leadership. The Fellowship allows great Victorian Indigenous leaders to maintain programs for their communities and advocate for Indigenous issues across Australia. Fellowships will be awarded to leaders across a variety of areas, and can include salary contributions, study grants, travel, or specific project needs.
The first Fellowship was awarded to Yorta Yorta Elder, Paul Briggs. Sir Douglas Nicholls, Paul Briggs and Michael Long have all provided pathways for Aboriginal people to help themselves and their broader communities. They have provided much needed pathways for non-Indigenous Australians to learn from Indigenous culture and heritage. Many of the positive social changes already achieved by current Sir Douglas Nicholls Fellow Paul Briggs have helped thousands of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
