ESSENDON has expressed extreme disappointment in emerging key position player Michael Hurley after he was involved in an alcohol-related incident in the early hours of Friday morning.
The 19-year-old was accused of punching and kicking a taxi driver and reported to have been arrested in an inner-city suburb.
Hurley was taken into police custody but the Bombers said last year's No.5 draft pick had not been charged.
Victoria Police is investigating the incident and Essendon managing director Peter Jackson confirmed the club had also spoken with Hurley.
"We are extremely disappointed that Michael was out so late and that he put himself in a situation where an incident occurred," Jackson said in a statement.
"He started drinking at the grand final Footy Show after-party and by night's end he had clearly had too much to drink.
"As a club we work with our players to help them make good choices – and the vast majority do – so it is disappointing and unacceptable that this situation has occurred.
"We also run a number of community programs where our players work with young people to educate them about the dangers associated with binge drinking.
"We are treating the matter very seriously and will take appropriate action once the details are clear. The club will continue speaking with Michael and he will assist police anyway he can."
Hurley's incident caps a disappointing week for AFL player behaviour.
On Wednesday, Brendan Fevola was fined $10,000 by Carlton for his actions during an alcohol-fuelled evening at the Brownlow Medal count.
Fevola came in for criticism from several quarters, including League boss Andrew Demetriou.
