The rain poured down for the start of the second quarter, but it didn’t dampen Bendigo’s spirits. They got off to the perfect start with Dean Dick launching a goal from outside 50. Bendigo were applying pressure all over the ground, but Berry managed to slip through and kick his fourth goal of the day. A soft 50m penalty then allowed Lourey to kick his second for the Dolphins. Bendigo weren’t able to kick the goals they needed with the wind, with both teams being physical with their play. The Bombers managed to break the drought, with Hayden Skipworth booting his first. That goal was quickly cancelled out by Lourey, who sneaked home his third major from the boundary. The sun came back out and Rhys Magin got Bendigo a handy goal before half-time. Bendigo were more competitive, but the wind had died down and they had missed the advantage to create more scoring opportunities. Frankston on the other hand, were able to convert their chances, and held onto a 31 point lead at the main break.
Bendigo came out after the long change, and wanted to click into gear straight away. Great pressure inside forward 50 allowed Grant Weekes to kick his first goal from in front. Murray replied soon after, with a mark on the lead and a goal from the boundary. Lourey then kicked his fourth for the day when he ran into an open goal. Bendigo were going forward, but Frankston defence held strong and rebounded the ball with relative ease. Lourey then popped up and snapped his fifth goal for the day. The Dolphins were successfully running the ball through the corridor, and it resulted in a goal to Toby Conroy. Frankston’s forwards kept applying the pressure, with Brett Dore kicking his first major after a good tackle. Bendigo were getting frustrated, and were giving away needless free kicks. Big Tom Bellchambers finally stood up for the Bombers, taking a pack mark in the goal square and converting the goal. Bendigo showed glimpses of good play, but couldn’t find any rhythm, with Frankston cruising to a 60 point lead at the final change.
The final quarter saw 100 gamer Berry kick his fifth goal, and he let everyone know about it. Skipworth never gave up and got his reward with a goal after a strong tackle. Cale Hooker, one of Bendigo’s better players on the day, provided a rare highlight when he took a speccy in defensive 50. But everything was going Framkston’s way, with Marcus Marigliani on the receiving end of a lucky bounce to kick his first goal of the game. The game went a bit quiet with the Dolphins in cruise control. Skipworth managed to kick his third after he broke a tackle and kicked truly. Heath Hocking then took a good diving mark inside 50 and kicked another goal. Bendigo were finishing off stronger and John Williams soon became a contender for Mark of the Year after his huge hanger inside forward 50. But he wasn’t able to convert this into a major. Troy Dickson then put the icing on the cake with a superb running goal from 50.
