The countdown to season 2002 is on in earnest with the Wizard Cup competition now in full swing. In our continuing Engine Room series we look at the senior listed players and pin-point their roles in the upcoming season. Today we take a look at DEAN RIOLI. The sublimely-skilled Rioli might just be ready to put together the season everyone knows he is capable of. A match-winner on his night, Rioli has been plagued by injury in the past two seasons. Injury free and fully fit he is among the most exciting players in the competition. This season could be a pivotal one in his career.

Rioli managed 17 games last season but never really reached the lofty expectations placed on him. He averaged about 13 possessions per game and kicked 24 goals for the season and he would be the first to admit they are statistics that probably don't befit a player blessed with his talent. Playing across half forward and in the mid-field, Rioli will want to improve on those numbers this season. He will want to average another five touches a game and he is certainly capable of kicking 50 goals during the course of a season.

Rioli was bitterly disappointed with the Bombers' performance on Grand Final day last year. Injury cost him a Premiership medal the previous season and he dearly wanted to join the club last season. It will be a driving force for Rioli in the pre-season period. He will want to get himself as fit as possible for the upcoming season.

At 23, Rioli is approaching the prime of his football career and he will be determined not to let it pass him by without giving himself the best opportunity to make the most of his talent. Luck has desserted him at times during his career and he is due for a change of fortune - he must be mentally and physically ready to make the most of every opportunity.

What will his role be on match day?

Rioli is undoubtedly a very dangerous forward. He kicks goals and can create opportunities from seemingly impossible positions. His creativeness is also very useful through the mid-field and he does push up and play that role at times during games. He will play both roles again this season and if he finds enough of the football he will hurt opposition sides.

What will the coaches want on match day?

The coaching staff will want to see Rioli continually running and pushing forward creating opportunites. They will want him to bring those around him into the game with a slick handball or a deft touch. They will also want him to contribute on the scoreboard and take some pressure of Matthew Lloyd who is the Bombers' obvious avenue to goal.
