Essendon's 2010 season is at the crossroads after it was embarrassed by Collingwood on football's grandest home and away stage.
The Bombers suffered a crushing 65-point Anzac Day loss and assistant coach Scott Camporeale conceded the performance was simply not good enough.
“You never plan for that,” Camporeale said.
""We just didn’t come to play and it was disappointing - they played very well.

“We were well beaten all over the ground. I think it would be hard to pinpoint one individual thing. Our defensive work wasn’t great and our ball usage wasn’t great.”

Essendon were put on the back foot from the get go, with seven unanswered Collingwood goals in the first term proving too much for the Bombers to recover from.

“They certainly came to play and our blokes just didn’t respond,” Camporeale said.

“The boys had to try to take responsibility for that and try to get it back on our terms and we weren’t able to do that today.”

The performance of emerging key position player Scott Gumbleton was one positive to come out of the match, with the 21-year-old leading and marking well and recording two majors.

“Scott worked hard which was pleasing to see,” Camporeale said.

“We needed everyone to stand up today and that just didn’t happen.”

The Bombers will look to repair their 1-4 win-loss record against the Hawks next Saturday night in what now looms as a make or break game for the club.

“We have to turn it around,” Camporeale said.

“We have to positive, we have to move forward and review the game and work on the areas we need to work on.

“In seven days we have another opportunity and we need to make the most of it.”
