""He’s got to sit down and work out if it’s worth while going on any more,"" he said. ""You’ve got to know yourself if you’re playing well or you’re capable of playing well.""
2004 hasn't seen Mercuri produce the kind of football all Bomber fans know he is capable of. Injury has made life difficult for him and he has played only eight senior games this year for a return of just three goals.
Sheedy defended his two-time premiership player saying that Mercuri has performed well when playing for the Bendigo Bombers in the VFL.
""Whether it’s a mental thing, a physical thing or whether he’s just flat we’re not quite sure. We can’t do any more than give him the opportunity that he deserves through his good form in the VFL,"" Sheedy said.
Another former Essendon premiership player’s career is also in limbo, with Justin Blumfield delisted by Richmond today.
Sheedy said he had not spoken to Blumfield since the news broke, but was supportive of the former Bomber who played 129 games and kicked 86 goals for the club between 1996 and 2002.
""He was a very good player for us at Essendon. He played very well the year we won the 2000 premiership,"" he said.
