New recruit Zach Merrett has been excited by his first few weeks at the Bombers as he continues to adapt to the rigors of an AFL training  schedule.

Despite joining his brother Jackson in the red and black the 18-year-old said it was a daunting moment walking into his new home for the first time.

“It was pretty intimidating to start with, walking into the club seeing your idols like Zaharakis and Heppell,” Merrett said.

“That was pretty daunting but they are all so accepting, welcoming and easily said g’day so I felt welcomed to the club straight away.

“I’m very exited to be here – the workload is obviously bigger but I am loving every minute of it so far.”

As he settled into pre-season training Merrett joined the club’s development group for an intense three day camp at the True Value Solar Centre last week.

“I think the boys found out a lot about themselves and others during the camp,” Merrett said.

“It was a different experience, but looking back now I really enjoyed it and it gave me a sense of achievement when we finished it.”

“We had a lot of sessions together, spent a lot of time together and lived together – I guess we found out a lot more personal things about each other and definitely feel like we got to know each other better.”

Brother Jackson has provided important support for Zach through his football journey so far with the youngster thrilled to join him in the AFL ranks.

“It was a bit weird walking around the locker room with my brother – it sort of felt like we were back home in the country footy club,” Zach said.

“He’s been really good tome, he’s given me lots of tips.

“I’ve tried not to lean on him too much but he’s giving me good direction and I’m loving being here with him.

“I’ve said it before but it really is the icing on the cake being at an AFL club with your brother.”

Merrett is looking forward to learning from coach Mark Thomspon this season but understands he must earn the respect of the two-time premiership winning coach.

“Bomber has a huge reputation, being a great coach for Geelong, so I’m really grateful that he is here.”

“He is very approachable and I have a lot of respect for him so hopefully I can gain his respect over time too.”
