Retiring veteran David Hille has credited the club’s younger players for remaining positive throughout the club’s turbulent year.

Speaking after the club’s 39-point loss to Richmond on Saturday night, Hille said he was confident the playing group was heading in the right direction.

“Hopefully without the distractions that we’ve had this year, and with a good pre-season, the guys will continue further in to the finals next year,” Hille said.

“There are a lot of positives with our club. All of the younger players have taken a step forward, the whole team has improved and we can only get better.

“The coaches said we have to now look forward to next year and we’re already looking ahead to the pre-season.

“I’m confident the boys are heading in the right direction. The young guys particularly at the club have a really good, positive attitude.”

Hille, who played 197 games for the red and black, said he was looking forward to retirement after 12 years in the game.

“I’m really looking forward to the retirement; I’m looking forward to trying new things,” Hille said.

“I’ve really enjoyed this year even though it’s been up and down, and even though I didn’t play many games at senior level.

Hille also acknowledged the club’s members and supporters following his farewell game.

“The supporters have always been great, but particularly this year,” Hille said.

“They’ve stood tough and it’s time to salute them.”
