Essendon midfielder Dyson Heppell is in doubt for Saturday night’s blockbuster against Carlton with the full extent of his foot injury yet to be determined.

Heppell was subbed out of Saturday afternoon’s loss to North Melbourne early in the second quarter.

Football Operations Manager Steve Alessio said further assessments were required before a full diagnosis could be made on the 21-year-old.

“He had an old injury there from a number of years ago and we think he has stirred that up a bit,” Alessio said.

“He has had the scans but we are not 100 per cent sure exactly where it is at the moment whether it is a strain or perhaps something a bit more is going on with his foot.”

“He is going to get an opinion today (Monday) and hopefully after that we will know where he is at with regards to his foot.”

Tom Bellchambers and Nick Kommer are both set to have scans after pulling up sore from Saturday afternoon’s loss.

Alessio said the scans were precautionary to ensure there were no serious concerns for the duo.

“They just have a bit of soreness coming out of the game around their hamstring and quad areas so they are both going to have their scans and hopefully we will learn a little bit more,” Alessio said.

Scott Gumbleton missed against North Melbourne with hamstring soreness.

“It was just a bit of soreness after the match the week before in his hamstring so he will look to step up his training and get through this week,” Alessio said.

“We are just being precautionary with Scotty because he has had a couple of hamstring problems in the past so we want to make sure he is one hundred per cent.”

Travis Colyer did not play at VFL or AFL level on the weekend as the club takes a cautious approach with him following tightness in his calf.

“He has a bit of tightness in the calf and we are really particular about not pushing him over the edge with that,” Alessio said.

“Once again that was precautionary to make sure he was being looked after and hopefully he will be right to step up this week.”
