In his second season at Essendon, Justin Murphy didn’t have the impact fans expected of him in the Bombers midfield. Starting the season well, they thought his form dwindled in the latter stages of the year and believe his retirement will provide an opportunity for a younger player to come through the ranks in a developing Essendon team.

What some of the Essendon fan’s had to say:

""Can hang up his boots a satisfied man I should think. Without being a superstar he was able to hold his own and some during his career. Versatile and honest player who frustrated opposition teams with his ball getting ability,"" Stuart Nixon

""Justin didn't have the best of seasons this year however he did do what he could considering the injuries he carried. I would have loved to see him kick a few more goals but that was not to be,"" Helen Scully

""Murphy had a good first year, but for whatever reason he didn't have much of an impact in 2005. I think that he made the right reason to retire, and leave the position open for a younger player,"" Gary Ryan

""Despite some critics, I personally thought Murphy was reasonably consistent throughout 2005, as his average of 15 disposals reflects. He seemed to play well when we were beaten as well, but he dominated as BOG in the win over St. Kilda. Been a good player,"" Samuel Wharton

""Began season 2005 very well, but faded fast and in to retirement. Justin served Essendon very well, and was a worthy trade. He proved a lot of Essendon fans wrong when he produced a stunning 2004. Best of luck to Justin, but we'll never forget the lasting images of him holding the football aloft in the 1999 Preliminary Final!"" Abhinav Ramachandran.
