After the best season of his career defender Cale Hooker deserves to be honoured with a place in the All Australian side to be revealed on Tuesday night
In his seventh season at Essendon the 25-year-old defender hit his straps playing the best football of his career against some of the best forwards of the modern era.
Hooker has been nominated in the All Australian squad of 40 alongside teammates Dyson Heppell with both hopeful of making the final team.
Assistant coach Matthew Egan said the Western Australian born full back deserved recognition for his stellar season.
“I think he deserves to be named an All Australian defender this season,” he said.
“Cale’s stats are all pretty much the same as last year but he has played on the best forward every week this year.”
“He played on some really good players and got some good results but he was able to still take really good mark intercepts.”
“He is not only beating the best forward every week but he is getting off and helping teammates as well.”
“I really hope he gets it because he deserves it but I am sure all he cares about is getting deeper into the finals than this year so hopefully that drives him.”
Hooker played every game for the Bombers this season averaging 19 disposals and 8 marks from his 23 games.
His capabilities to mark overhead shone out in 2014 leading him to finish second in the league for marks at the end of the home and away season.
Heppell will also be vying for his first All Australian honour when the team is revealed on Tuesday September 16.
The All Australian selection panel is Gillon McLachlan (chairman), Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Mark Evans, Danny Frawley, Glen Jakovich, Cameron Ling, Matthew Richardson and Warren Tredrea.
