Essendon midfielder David Zaharakis is confident the club’s midfield brigade can cover the potential loss of captain Jobe Watson through injury.

Watson left the field late in Saturday night’s win over Greater Western Sydney with what appears to be an injury to his upper leg.

The captain will have scans in the next few days to determine the full extent of the injury.

Zaharakis has faith the midfield group has the capacity to stand up if Watson is to miss.

“We experienced it last year for three or four weeks when he injured his collarbone so as a midfield we just have to step up in his absence,” Zaharakis said.

“If he is away for a few weeks we are prepared to do that.”

“Myself, Dyson Heppell, Brent Stanton and Brendon Goddard we will all have to step up in his absence.”

The running midfielder was a shining light in Essendon’s 15 point win on Saturday night finishing the match with 34 disposals and two goals.

Coach Mark Thompson praised Zaharakis' determination and work rate following the match.

“He was very impressive tonight and it is great that he has come back into some great form.”

“David started the season quite slow but he has worked his way into this form where he has real influence on the game.”

“He is one of our better players and he is starting to play with form that suggests he is one of our better players.”

“We are really pleased with him.”
