Essendon remains one of two clubs to have shown a strong interest in recruiting 2008 Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney according to reports in Tuesday papers.
The 29-year-old has one year remaining on his contract at the Western Bulldogs but is reportedly on the hunt for a fresh start with the Dogs open to discussions.
Cooney becomes a free agent at the end of next year but has reportedly attracted interest from both North Melbourne and Essendon.
The elite midfielder has played 219 games in eleven seasons at the Bulldogs despite a number of injury setbacks.
In 2011 and 2012 he suffered degenerative knee issues but recovered to play 37 games in the last two seasons.
List manager Adrian Dodoro last week said the club was considering the recruitment of a few experienced players if the option presented itself.
“A lot of our players are signed so there won’t be a lot of movement on our list,” Dodoro said last week.
“There won’t be a lot of change but there might be a couple of players that we are looking at that might come in from other clubs.”
Essendon is also on the hunt for a back up ruckman with Johnathan Giles, Luke Lowden and Daniel Gorringe all linked to the club in recent days.
