As we celebrate the club’s latest milestone of 60,000 members let’s look at some other 60s that have been significant through the years.
The 60th player to debut for Essendon- Alf Dear who played a total of 6 games all in 1900.
Our 60th win was at Corio over Geelong in round 17, 1901. Essendon winning 9.12.66 to the Pivotonians 5.3.33. The great Albert Thurgood bagged 5 goals that day.
The first League player to kick 60 goals in a season was Greg Stockdale with 68 in 1923. However Albert Thurgood had achieved this feat 30 years earlier in 1893 with 63 goals when the club played in the VFA. Thurgood was the first player in the VFA to kick more than 50 goals in a season, a phenomenal achievement for the time.
The first 60,000 crowd for an Essendon game was 64,148 v Carlton in the 1922 semi final at the MCG. Essendon got up that day 5.9.39 to Carlton 4.10.34.
Our 60th season of competition was 1934 (the club first played in 1873 and missed two years in 1916-17 because of a dispute with the VFL). But 1934 wasn’t great year and the club finished with only five wins. However a young Dick Reynolds, in only his second season, provided some light by winning the first of his three Brownlow medals and going to become the greatest Bomber of all time.
60kg player. Our only 60kg player was long time secretary and Hall of Fame member Bill Cookson. Cookson managed two games in 1924 but made his mark as an administrator serving the club as secretary from 1944-1972.
