Essendon Football Club has achieved a historic milestone, passing 60,000 members for the first time in the club’s history.

The membership tally eclipses the club's previous record of 56,172 set in 2013 and now sits 5,000 members ahead of the same time last year.

Currently 60,089 members have chosen to 'Don The Sash' in 2014.

Essendon Captain Jobe Watson thanked the club's loyal and passionate members for their unwavering support in a video message to members.

"From the players we say thank you to all of our members for their ongoing support this season, we truly appreciate having such loyal supporters," Watson said.

"To run out knowing that we have a huge membership base behind us makes a world of difference so thank you and keep up the great support you show for our club for the rest of this season."

Essendon's membership has shown significant increase over the last four seasons:

50,271 (2011)

47,708 (2012)

56,172 (2013)

Coach Mark Thompson said reaching 60,089 members was a great achievement for the club.

“Our members are extremely loyal to this club and continue to show fantastic support for our great club."
