Head of Player Development James Byrne has decided to pursue business and career opportunities away from the Essendon Football Club.
Byrne was appointed Head of Player Development in November 2011. During his three seasons at the club, Byrne has been responsible for the development program servicing players in the 1 – 3 year category. In 2014, eight players from the development program debuted at AFL level.
“I have decided the time is right for my family and me to step away from football and pursue my interests in the corporate and commercial world,” Byrne said.
“I feel fortunate to have worked with great people in my time at the club. I would like to thank the staff and players and I wish them success for next season and beyond.
“I believe the development of the playing list is in good hands with Hayden Skipworth and Paul Corrigan, who will continue to build on the achievements of the development group moving forward.
“However I am excited to have more time to spend with my wife and two daughters and re-establish my career in the finance industry.”
General Manager – Football Performance Neil Craig thanked James for his contribution to the club.
“We thank James for his fantastic contribution to the Essendon Football Club and wish him, wife Camilla and their family every success for the future,” Craig said.
Byrne will pursue a career in the commercial world, joining a Funds Management company.
The club will now begin the process of replacing the role and will communicate any developments when necessary.
