A DECISION on who will coach Essendon is not expected until October.

The Bombers released a statement on Monday afternoon, in which they stated: “The appointment panel, led by Paul Hamilton, Ian Robson and Scott Lucas, has begun reviewing applications with candidates.

“The process still has some way to run and it is unlikely that an announcement will be made before the end of the month.”

Matthew Knights was sacked as coach just a day after the Bombers ended their 2010 campaign with a loss to the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium in round 22.

Since then, Essendon officials have continually said they will not be rushed into making a decision on who will lead the club in 2011 and beyond.

It is believed Bombers assistant coach Alan Richardson and Fremantle assistant Chris Scott are among those in contention to be appointed to the position.

However, punters keep backing Essendon legend and 1996 Brownlow Medallist James Hird to change his mind and return to Windy Hill.
