After playing the majority of the season up forward, Pears has relished a move back to defence in the last two weeks. The 25-year-old patrolled the backline on the weekend against the Cats, gathering 21 disposals and taking nine marks. Growing in confidence and injury free, Pears’ is showing some positive signs.
Adam Cooney
The 2008 Brownlow Medalist made his return through the VFL on the weekend after being sidelined for the last three matches due to injury. After a slow start, Cooney was influential in the second half and played a major role in the 42-point comeback. The 29-year-old racked up 24 touches and booted a crucial last-quarter goal.
Courtenay Dempsey
Dempsey arguably kept the side within striking distance of Geelong on the weekend, booting four goals at vital stages of the match. A permanent move to attack for the afternoon saw Dempsey jump out of the blocks to kick the first two goals of the match in the first two minutes. Looking lively throughout, Dempsey presented well for his teammates and applied immense forward pressure.
Jonathan Giles
Giles has been on this list for several weeks now as he continues to gather momentum towards AFL selection. Giles was solid against the Cats with 27 hitouts and a long-range last quarter goal that sealed the game for the Bombers. Ultimately Giles’ fate is in the hands of the selection committee on whether they feel the side needs two ruckman against the Bulldogs on Sunday.
