Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson this morning received a ""please explain"" letter from the AFL over comments he made in a press release yesterday relating to the Matthew Lloyd report and subsequent suspension. The explanation is required to be with the AFL by 5.00pm this afternoon. In yesterday's release Jackson re-iterated the club's disappointment over the one-week penalty but said it would accept the umpires' decision and get on with trying to win the Premiership.

Clubs can be fined for making comment on reports or the subsequent findings of the AFL tribunal. Essendon could simply get a slap on the wrist or be fined up to $5000 if the AFL believes it has made comment. The Lloyd case has created plenty of interest among the football fraternity. Essendon disputed suggestions that Lloyd should have been reported prior to the charge being laid. After the report was made AFL chief executive Wayne Jackson described Essendon's comments as gamesmanship and referred to other head-butting cases this season that had resulted in suspensions.
