Brent Stanton has paid tribute to his younger teammates for their ability to respond in the last quarter against Brisbane.

The Bombers led for much of Stanton’s 250th match, but gave up the lead in the last term.

A run of five unanswered goals to close out the game secured the win for the Dons and Stanton said he was proud of his younger teammates’ resilience.

“You see the likes of Raz, Walla and Zach Merrett and the younger brigade of the Football Club standing up and saying ‘no, we’re not going to let this game go’,” he said.

“It’s just great to be a part of this Football Club at the moment … it’s exciting and fun and that’s what we’re all here for.”

Orazio Fantasia kicked five goals, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti set a goal up in the last term and booted one of his own, while Merrett amassed 32 disposals.

Stanton concedes it wasn’t a perfect performance, but the ability to fight back demonstrates a lot about the feeling within the playing group.

“The boys were challenged in the third quarter and it just shows the spirit of this football team at the moment, that we were able to fight back and wrestle momentum back and come out with a win,” he said.

Stanton picked up 17 possessions in his milestone match.

He made his debut for the Club in 2004 and has learned the value of interstate wins throughout his career.

“It’s a massive opportunity for the Football Club to try and get these wins on the road … it’s character building really, ever since I’ve been at the Football Club we haven’t really had great success winning on the road,” Stanton said.

“You’re not always going to win pretty and tonight certainly wasn’t pretty, but we got the job done in most areas.

“We played some good footy, its just patches we’ve got to fix up at the moment and I think that’s going to come.

“We’re going to have challenges throughout the year and this might be one of those challenges at this point in time but we’re just going to keep training and keep improving.”
