The Essendon faithful has gone above and beyond in supporting those impacted by the bushfire crisis, helping Dyson Heppell instantly smash his $50k fundraising target.

The Bombers captain announced on Monday night that he would shave his signature locks on Friday for donations to Wildlife Victoria and the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund - the latter particularly close to his heart as a proud Gippsland product.

Just one hour after the announcement, Heppell had surpassed his target, with the tally nearing $100k by midday on Tuesday.

Donations came thick and fast amid an outpouring of emotion and support, with another four days left to contribute.

DONATE NOW TO THE SKIPPER'S SHAVE

The highest donor will have the opportunity to visit The Hangar on Friday, grab the clippers and do the honours.

Below is a snapshot of the heartwarming responses from those who have generously donated.

I’m a Bombers supporter and a regular visitor to east Gippsland. It’s heartbreaking to see what’s happening to our beautiful state. Hopefully we can make a difference and help everyone get back on their feet. The loss of life both human and animal is devastating on a barely imaginable level. The carers and volunteers and all the emergency workers that are putting countless hours in, deserve all the assistance we can provide. A big thanks from me. Stay safe.

There is so much heartache around our country, to be able to help in a small way is a privilege. Good on you Dyson Heppell for your effort and to all the fire fighters and emergency services there are not enough words to express the love that goes out to you all for your endless commitment to your work.

As a Bombers fan since I was born (and to the day I die), and as an Australian living abroad for the past 20 years, this donation is the least I can do to support two valuable causes at once. I am devastated as I watch the daily media reports and hear news from friends and family of what is happening in my homeland right now. Good luck, Dyson! I know this is a brave move for you and I admire your support of your fellow countrymen and women through the big shave.

Max Oliver

Love what you’re doing, Dyson. More than an athlete. Congrats on passing your goal you champion. Truly saving lives.

Super proud of you captain and the whole club for its commitment to donate to this cause. Thank you for being a great leader. Go Bombers!

Brett Sabell

I'm a mad Bombers fan, but more so because of this wonderful cause.

My Essendon-obsessed seven-year-old son keeps reminding me about how lucky we are over here in WA - safe from any fires. Support given where support is due.
