Essendon’s young stars continue to demonstrate why the future is bright for the club. 

This week, the team featured six players who have yet to play 50 games including Zach Merrett, Joe Daniher, Orazio Fantasia, Elliott Kavanagh, Patrick Ambrose and Martin Gleeson with Hird praising their contribution to the game. 

He made particular mention of midfielder Elliott Kavanagh, who was elevated to the senior side for his first game of 2015 after several strong performances for Essendon’s VFL side.

“I thought that Kavanagh’s performance today was the best game that he’s played for the club,”Hird said.

“We have some good young players.

“We’ll have a look at our younger players and see who will come in.” 

Zach Merrett’s speed and attack on the opposition continues to cause headaches as he builds on a strong start to 2015.  

Merrett finished with 27 disposals and four clearances, both career highs, as well as a game high eight tackles. 

Despite not having a brilliant night in front of the goals, Daniher continues to develop as a power forward this season. 

He may have only finished with one goal for the night but Daniher worked hard throughout to give options to the Bombers’midfield group as they moved the ball forward.

After round ten, the youngster has 20 goals and currently sits in the top 15 for goal scorers in the AFL. 

Given consistent opportunity Essendon’s youth will gain valuable on field experience and continue to build on their already strong foundations.
