Zach Merrett has continued his rise among the Essendon ranks after a stellar second year at the club.

The 19-year old picked up both the club’s Rising Star award and the Most Improved player award at Wednesday night’s Crichton Medal.

Taken with pick number 26  in the 2013 draft, Merrett enjoyed a dream debut year playing in 20 games and catching the attention of the entire AFL community when he was awarded a NAB Rising Star nomination for his efforts against Richmond in round seven of 2014.

The youngster not only brought that form into the 2015 season, he took it to another level.

In the absence of some key midfielders, Merrett shouldered the responsibility of playing in a multitude of positions - including on the wing, as a half forward and at times in the forward pocket.

However, his best work was done on the ball where his attacking style and ability to win the contested ball really shone through.

Consistently among the team’s best, Merrett averaged 22 disposals and six tackles in 2015 before being struck down with a foot injury in round 18. He would not return for the season.

On receiving the club’s rising star award, Merrett thanked all those at the club who had helped in his development.

“Thanks to everyone at the club who have helped me over the last two years," said Merrett

"Also thanks to people like Brendon Goddard and Dyson Heppell who I've worked closely with.

"Without you I wouldn't be where I am today."

Zach is the second of the Merrett brothers to have won the ‘Rising Star’ award with his brother Jackson winning it in 2013.

Showcasing immense talent, speed and dedication to his game, the youngster from Cobden is seen as an important part of the club’s future.

Now recovered from his foot injury, Merrett is looking forward to a full pre-season and getting back out onto the field in 2016.
