The coaches’ faith in one young Bomber is paying its dividends both on and off the field.
Defender Marty Gleeson has had his most consistent season to date having played in every game so far this season.
Taken in the 2012 National Draft, Gleeson made a promising start to his career in 2014, impressing coaches with his poise, dash and courage around the contest.
Gleeson’s talent did not go unnoticed when he played in seven first eight games of 2014 before being struck down with a quad injury, hampering his development for the remainder of the year.
However, a new year brought a new opportunity for Gleeson.
He came back fresh and ready for the challenge and has credited his hard work in the pre-season with his consistent selection in the team.
“I had a pretty big pre-season this year, the first one I’ve really completed since I’ve been there,” Gleeson said.
“Obviously I wanted to play round one and then go from there and since then I’ve been pretty keen to hold my spot which I’ve been able to do so far.
As a defender, Gleeson’s impact has been noticeable across the half-back flank.
From 18 games he ranks inside the top-10 for many of the key stats across the team and he’s learned some valuable lessons from the experienced Essendon backline along the way.
“My last two years I’ve been playing half back flank which I really enjoy,” Gleeson said.
“Obviously we’ve got a few really good defenders to learn off down there.”
Although he is settled in the backline at the moment, the run that Gleeson is able to provide has seen him moved up the ground at times where he has shown promise in being able to move the ball into the forward line effectively and efficiently.
“I’ve even been sneaking up to the wing lately which has been good for my development,” Gleeson said.
“I think that’s probably going to be my role moving forward; being able to play on the half back flank and then moving up on to the wing to give a lot of run when I need to.”
Gleeson is set to line-up in his 19th game for the season this weekend as the Bombers make the trip to Spotless Stadium to take on the GWS Giants.
