The end of the 2015 season may be fast approaching, but that hasn’t changed the desire for many young Bombers to play finals football.

Although not impossible, with only seven matches remaining this year it will be a tough ask for the Bombers to make the finals this year.

But, speaking ahead of his 100^th game, stand-in captain Dyson Heppell believes the desire among the team to be a successful finals team within the next few years is extremely strong.

Heppell has played in two elimination finals during his time at the Bombers with the defeats only further fuelling his motivation to win.

“That’s what you play footy for I reckon is success,” Heppell said.

“To play in those losing finals was very disappointing. We worked so hard all year to get to that position and we sort of got beaten convincingly."

Both Heppell and former coach Kevin Sheedy were adamant that the ‘blooding’ of young talent into the side would only serve to benefit the club in the future.

Sheedy is no stranger to introducing youth into a side having successfully done so at both Essendon and more recently with Greater Western Sydney – who are now starting to find consistent form.

The four-time premiership coach believes fans will not have to wait long to see exactly what Essendon’s youth are capable of.

“It really pays divedends,” Sheedy said.

“The more you blood now, by the middle of next year you’ve got something exciting.”

Essendon’s new generation of ‘Baby Bombers’, led by 23 year old Heppell, have shown great improvement in recent weeks.

With players such as Jason Ashby, the Merrett brothers, Nick O’Brien, Patrick Ambrose, Ariel Steinberg and many others all getting consistent time out on the ground, the future looks bright for the club’s 60,000 plus loyal members and supporters.

“We’ve got some very exciting young guys coming through,” Heppell said.

“The attitude that they’re going in with is simply just to play their role and perform for the team and it’s exactly what they’ve been doing and we can’t ask for anything more.

“I certainly reckon over this period of years, we’ll certainly push deep into the finals.”
