Essendon’s All-Australian nominee, Michael Hurley, has finished runner-up in the Club’s Best and Fairest award.
The 25 year old was also named Best Defensive Player.
“It’s a little bit unexpected to be up here,” Hurley said.
“I’d like to thank Matthew Egan who has been my defensive coach for the last two years.
“He’s a good friend and a good coach.”
Hurley was assigned the opposition’s best key forward each week and performed his role expertly, not only quelling his opponent, but also setting up Essendon’s attack.
He recorded more than 20 disposals in 13 of his 19 games across the season.
An ankle injury late in the year saw him sidelined for three games, but he returned to finish the year strongly.
