Essendon coach Matthew Knights said it was important his team finished the season strongly despite it almost certainly being eliminated from the finals’ race. A poor first quarter cost the Bombers dearly today but Knights was philosophical after the game.

“I didn’t think we were very good against Melbourne last week either so we have hit a bit of a flat spot. We started poorly today – full credit to the Eagles who were good – but we need to be much better than that. It was disappointing when you consider what was on the line today,” Knights said.

“I still think we have made some reasonable improvement in recent weeks. I am happy to keep pushing some younger players through – to be honest, given the injury list at the moment I don’t have much choice.”

Essendon’s four-quarter contributors were few and far between. Paddy Ryder and Henry Slattery were very good in defence and Andrew Lovett provided some spark in the midfield. Knights was pleased with the return of Courtenay Dempsey.

“We think he can be a quality player for us and to see him return and get 25 touches was really pleasing. He moves well and uses the ball well – for a player who hasn’t played much football that was exciting for our fans,” Knights said.

The Bomber coach said he understood the frustration fans had with Jason Laycock, who despite kicking three goals, looked down on confidence.

“He can look awkward at times – as big blokes can – and he made some mistakes today. But we still think he can play an important role backing up David Hille. He just has to believe he can do it and really attack the game with some vigour,” Knights said.
