A near capacity crowd is expected to be on hand as Essendon launch the next chapter of their Comeback Story tonight at the MCG.

More than 80,000 fans are expected to attend the clash between the Bombers and the Hawks.

For six Dons, the game marks a return after more than a year out of the game.

Captain Dyson Heppell, Jobe Watson, Travis Colyer, Cale Hooker, Michael Hurley and Brent Stanton will finally have the opportunity to be judged on their footballing ability again.

“It’s probably the moment most Essendon fans have really been waiting for,” Coach John Worsfold said.

“We’ve addressed a lot of things in the last few weeks and the big thing is the guys are getting to do what they love doing.

“That’s what is pleasing for me.

“I love the game and I wish I could still play but these guys have got the opportunity to play AFL footy – they’re nervous and anxious but that’s what’s fun about it.”

The Bombers will mark the occasion with a fan march to the ground, a guard of honour featuring Club greats and a pre-game ritual inspired by Kevin Sheedy.

“It’s a great old rival of Essendon’s, so we want our fans there loud and proud and ready to help us,” Worsfold said.

The ‘old rival’ has a new look tonight.

Premiership players Jordan Lewis, Brad Hill and Sam Mitchell have departed and for tonight at least, Luke Hodge will be watching from the sidelines. 

But Worsfold expects them to remain one of the top sides this season.

“Everyone knows they’re going to be threatening and around the mark,” he said.

“We’re rapt to have the opportunity to play against a very good team in round one.
