The Essendon Football Club has made a special journey to Wadeye, about 400 kilometres out of Darwin.
It has a population of about 3,000 with eight languages spoken across the various groups.
Courtenay Dempsey, Shaun Edwards and Jake Long spent the day in the remote town.
They mixed with locals and were on hand as the indigenous communities, including the Wadeye Bombers, took to the field.
“It’s great to see all the kids, they just love footy,” Long said.
“It’s a vehicle that can take them somewhere.
“I’m only 19 and they’re cheering my name. They just love you, they love the Long family and they still know my Dad.”
The Essendon players and the ‘Boots for All’ organisation made an important contribution when they distributed Bombers clothing and boots to the local children.
“We brought all of the old training gear down so there is a few Alex Browne’s and Steinberg’s running around in Port Keats now, so they just loved it,” Edwards said.
“All the players put in their old boots and people can drop boots off at the Club.
“We got to make a few kids happy today, obviously they don’t have much, so to be able to make their day was pretty good.”
