President Dave Barham and CEO Craig Vozzo made the below statement on behalf of the Essendon Football Club.
“The Essendon Football Club is delighted that Neale Daniher has been chosen as the Australian of the Year. Neale is a true Essendon legend, having played 82 games in the red and black, captaining the club in 1982, and playing a key role as assistant coach in our 1993 premiership victory. These achievements alone cemented his place as one of our most beloved figures.
Neale's impact extends far beyond the football field. His tireless work in raising awareness and funds to fight Motor Neurone Disease has touched the lives of countless Australians. His dedication to this cause is an inspiration to us all.
One of Neale’s favourite sayings is “when all is said and done, more is said than done.” Neale has done more than most and he will be remembered for the outstanding contribution he has made for the benefit of others.
Neale's legacy will be one of courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to making a difference. The entire Essendon Football Club family congratulates Neale on this well-deserved recognition. We are incredibly proud of him and all he has achieved.”
Neale's journey has been one of extraordinary resilience. Since his diagnosis with MND in 2013, he has faced this immense challenge with remarkable strength and determination. But Neale's impact extends far beyond his personal battle. He has become a beacon of hope for countless people living with MND, and his advocacy has raised awareness and much-needed funds for research into this devastating disease.
The Essendon Football Club is proud to join forces with FightMND and Carlton for the annual King's Birthday Eve clash. This game provides a powerful platform to "Freeze the 'G" and raise vital funds and awareness in the battle against Motor Neurone Disease.
