Essendon’s latest swingman, Cale Hooker, provided another example of his ability to influence games at both ends on Friday night.
The Bombers went down by 25 points to the Kangaroos but Hooker was a strong target in the forward line.
“Hooker has taken himself from a pretty good backman four years ago to an outstanding All-Australian centre half back… to now a very good forward as well,” Essendon Coach James Hird said.
“It’s very hard to get those sorts of players – we’re very happy he’s playing for us.”
Hooker pulled in 13 marks and had five shots at goal against the Kangaroos.
He’s kicked four goals and taken 27 marks since being moved forward against St Kilda three weeks ago.
“Hooker is a really good example for our young forwards [on] how you compete,” Hird said.
“He’s got terrific hands, he competes, he sets the ground up well and has some space to lead back into.”
Whether Hooker’s time in the forward line continues may depend on the availability of other players.
Jake Carlisle is recovering from an ankle injury.
While Shaun McKernan could play as a key forward if Jonathan Giles comes in to the line up.
