Gach Nyuon was seven when he arrived in Australia from Sudan.
His family settled in Ballarat for five years before relocating to Melbourne’s south-east.
Nyuon is the fifth of eight children and was invited down to a local footy club at the age of 14 after friends saw his exploits during a schoolyard kick to kick.
After some initial speed bumps learning the vagaries of an ever evolving game, the teenager found his place, culminating in selection for Vic Country and the All Australian under 18 side this year.
He stands two metres tall and when his name was read out with the Bombers first pick in today’s Rookie Draft, he had only 45 Football games to his name…ever.
“Gach is a Sudanese boy who is an athletic ruckman with a great vertical leap,” Dandenong Stingrays Talent Manager, Mark Wheeler told Inside Fooball.
“He really evolved his game in all aspects this year given he hasn’t played a lot of footy as a younger player.
“Very athletic and is now starting to understand the game a lot more.
“One of those players that just kept improving each time he’s stepped out and the more he plays the better he’ll get.”
Nyuon was a standout performer at the AFL Draft Combine, placing in the top two for the relative running vertical jump (94cm), running vertical jump (362cm) and the standing vertical jump (330cm).
