Essendon produced its second highest score of the season and some of its best attacking football according to the club’s all-time leading goal kicker Matthew Lloyd.
The Bombers kicked six goals in the opening quarter against the Power and 17 for the game.
“It was probably the best attacking quarter the Bombers have had in a long, long time,” Lloyd said.
“I think the defence has been solid all year, but now to put scoreboard pressure on was a fantastic step forward.”
The Bombers have averaged around 11 goals a game, well below ladder leaders Hawthorn (17) and West Coast (16).
Lloyd said the team is now moving the ball a lot better, which is allowing them to create more scoring opportunities.
“Early on, the Bombers were going far too wide,” he said.
“The first look was always out to the right or to the left, it was never down the corridor.
“Since the shift in ball movement, the Bombers have looked far more attacking.”
While the team’s attack was on song, defensively there is room for improvement.
The Bombers gave up 20 goals including seven in the last quarter.
“It’s just finding that balance and that’s exactly what the top four sides do particularly Hawthorn, West Coast and the Western Bulldogs this year,” Lloyd said.
