Alex Browne’s return to senior football may not have gone exactly to plan, but the midfielder was just happy to be out on an AFL field again.
It had been 481 days since Browne was cruelly struck down by a knee injury in the opening game of the 2014 NAB Challenge. Working tirelessly on his rehabilitation, Browne’s return was cut short after being knocked out in a tackle early in the game.
“I remember going up for the ball and expecting the tackle,” Browne said.
“That was it.
“I don’t think I’ve passed a test ever in my life, so I didn’t have much chance.”
Despite the brevity of his return the midfielder was happy to get the opportunity.
“It’s been the best half hour that I’ve had in two and a half years,” Browne said.
“It’s just good that I’m able to come back and from the quarter and a half I took a little to get into the game but I felt that I was trying to inject myself into game.
“I felt like it was alright, hopefully I’m up for next week and I’m available for selection.

Drafted by the club in 2010 Browne has had a horror run with injuries only playing in eight senior games before the weekend’s match.
2015 has proven to be a more successful year for Browne however, who has consistently shown strong form for Essendon VFL where he has averaged 22 disposals from 11 games, as well as being awarded the ‘Sir Doug Nicholls’ Award for his best on ground performance during the round seven VFL game against Richmond.
Now entering his fifth year at the club the midfielder’s short taste of senior football over the weekend has him yearning for more.
“Obviously I’ve had a long time out, but I’m just happy to play.
“I’ve been in the system for five years now so I’m ready to go.
“I just want to play with my mates, I want to get into the ones and hold my spot.”
