Millicent is a South Australian town about four hours east of Adelaide.
It’s only slightly longer from Millicent to Melbourne.
The town has a population of 5,000 and can lay claim to one of the Bombers latest recruits.
Mason Redman grew up in Millicent, the son of a lobster fisherman.
He moved to Adelaide to further his football this year and said that experience has him well prepared for his next move to Melbourne.
“I didn’t find it too hard, it was a good thing that I was doing year 12 at the time because I was just busy – busy all the time – you don’t get enough time to be home sick,” he said.
“It (Melbourne) is the same distance from my hometown, so it won’t be too hard I don’t think.”
Redman was with his family in Adelaide on draft night.
He learnt of his selection only via the loud noise emanating from a nearby room.
“I was just sitting outside, zoned out from the TV,” he said.
“I could hear Mum screaming. It all happened very quickly and I’m very excited.
“I had a few meetings with the recruiters from the Bombers.
“I had a good feeling but wasn’t really expecting too much.”
Like first round draftee Aaron Francis, Redman has the ability to play in a variety of positions and that Brendon Goddard type role is something he enjoys.
“I probably did that a bit this year at Glenelg and in the state team just swapped around positions,” he said.
“Some people have noticed that we (he and Goddard) have got similar looks and I play a bit like him as well. I’ve always looked up to him as a player.”
