What some of the Essendon fans had to say:
""Showed why he is rated the third best Essendon player in history. Silky skills, and leadership."" (Brent Biasin)

""The champ lived up to what we all expect of this bloke. Shame injuries again prevented him from having a full season, but when he played he didn't let the team or us supporters down. A legend."" (Wayne Geggie)

""Once again James was sensational. It wouldn't be a footy season without missing a few games to some unlucky injury or another, when he was fit he was clearly the side's most important player. Probably the difference between making and missing out on the finals the last several years - we're going to miss him when he retires!"" (Shane King)

""Another great year full of courage, determination, skill and leadership. Will he ever get the chance to have an injury free year!"" (Rod Ansell)

""Just brilliant. The bombers may have missed the finals if it wasn't for this man. Has the best skills of any player going around. His football sense/brain is unequalled. One of the hardest, toughest and fairest players ever."" (Scott Jackson)

""James was in charge of the ground in most of the games he played. As a Captain I thought he struck a delicate balance of allowing others to develop and saving the side when it was in trouble. One year without injury would be nice."" (Darren Matthews)

""What can you about Sir James? As fantastic as he was this year, it proved again that we've got to find some help for him. Ideally, his stints in the midfield can be kept to a minimum and we might get the bonus of seeing him for a few more years yet."" (Shane Abood)

""Brilliant, inspirational. Best Essendon player I’ve seen. Another great season, hopefully 2005 is similar and he plays on for another couple of years."" (Adam Taxakis)

""Quality player, inspirational leader when I think he doesn’t get any better, he’ll pull a brilliant game out of the bag. It will be a sorry day for football when James retires. I don't think they get any better!"" (Sonya Caruna)
