Darcy Parish is enjoying the benefits of his first full AFL pre-season with the Bombers young star adding some kilos and improving his endurance.
The number five draft pick was on a modified pre-season program when he first arrived at the Club in late 2015.
But now the shackles are off and Parish is making the most of it.
“I’m a bit heavier than what I started off as, probably six or seven kilos,” he said.
“Aerobically I’m a lot better as well, running a lot quicker times.
“Obviously we’re (last year’s draftees) a lot more involved in the second year.
“Strength builds up, fitness base builds up as well so you can definitely tell from this time last year there is a huge step up from all of the boys.
“They’re all looking fit and strong and looking forward to the year.”
Parish played 20 games in his first AFL season and averaged 21 disposals.
Only Zach Merrett picked up more contested possessions for the Bombers throughout the season.
“There was a lot of opportunity for us younger guys and I took it with both hands to play as many games as I could,” Parish said.
“I’m very happy with how the year went individually.
“As a team, it was tough circumstance, but to get three wins on the board was a great feeling.
“It’s a great bunch of boys and now everyone is back raring to go and it’ll be a great 2017.”
At the conclusion of the 2016 season, Parish spent a couple of weeks resting before ramping up his preparation at the training base of his former TAC Cup club, Geelong Falcons.
It’s all part of push to improve his all-round game.
“Aerobically I want to get to more contests and finish of games stronger,” he said.
“And also just my craft around stoppages. It has been great with ‘Myersy’ (David Myers) and ‘Hep’ (Dyson Heppell) who I’ve already learnt off.
“It’s great to have all of the boys back, there was great excitement and buzz … you noticed it straight away.
“Everyone is fit and raring to go so it’s great.”
