The ‘swingman’ is becoming more and more valuable in today’s game and Essendon is home to a few.
Cale Hooker is an All-Australian defender and best and fairest winning forward, while Aaron Francis is just starting a career that could see him split his time between attack and defence.
But on Sunday, it was Mitch Brown who showed his wares as a ‘swingman’.
Having spent much of the season in attack where he’s booted 19 goals, Brown was moved to defence.
He lined up on Rhys Stanley for the majority of the game and kept his Cats opponent to just eight possessions.
At the same time, Brown collected 25 of his own and took 18 marks, just one short of the Essendon record held by Jake Carlisle
“To Mitch’s credit he’s played well at both ends for us this year,” Essendon Coach John Worsfold said.
“He started on Stanley and I though he did a really good job for us, so I’m rapt.
“He’s another player that we drafted not really knowing if he would get much of an opportunity this year and he’s taken big steps forward.
“I’m confident that with what he’s learnt from the games this year, if his attitude is to improve more, he’ll be a better footballer next year.”
