Essendon will help commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan by selling badges to raise money for veterans at Sunday’s match against Western Bulldogs.
The Battle of Long Tan took place during the Vietnam War.
“It’s obviously a very significant event in Australian history and for our Vietnam veterans,” Essendon Coach John Worsfold said.
“We’re really pleased to be able to play a small role in commemorating that.”
Of the 11 VFL players who fought in the Vietnam War, six played for Essendon.
Ian Payne was in his early years with the Bombers when he was called up for National Service.
“I played 22 games before I went in and I was out of the system (VFL) for two years,” he said.
“At the time it was National Service, you get called up, you get the letter and you go in and do your medical and you’re in.”
Payne served for six months in Vung Tau and another six months in Nui Dat.
“I still keep in touch with a lot of the guys. It’s a bit like a footy club in terms of the reunions and gatherings throughout the year,” he said.
“I went to Vietnam in 1968, not long after the Battle of Long Tan so we certainly knew a lot about it.
“Next year will be 50 years since we went into the army, there was a lot of people involved.”
Payne resumed his career with the Bombers in 1969 and played for another few seasons before retiring with 45 games to his name.
Badges will be available on the concourse at Etihad Stadium in the lead up to the first bounce.
