The prospect of a debut in the Dreamtime at the ‘G match for Jake Long moved a small step closer during the week.
Jonathan Simpkin’s move to the long-term injury list has opened the door for the Bombers to promote one of their rookies.
Long is among four potential options that also includes the in-form Will Hams.
List and Recruiting Manager Adrian Dodoro said the pair have been impressive so far this season.
“It gives us an opportunity to look at a couple of our rookie players that have been playing fantastic football,” Dodoro said.
“The two that stand out are Will Hams, who has already played senior football, was dropped to our Rookie List due to injury, but he’s been outstanding this year.
“The other one is Jake Long – Jake in his second year at the Club has excited everyone.
“He’s probably our most improved player at the Club thus far.
“No doubt they’ll both be giving John a massive headache as to who should get the spot in the next couple of weeks."
Hams has been one of the Bombers best in the VFL this season where he has averaged 19 possessions and four tackles per game. Long is averaging 18 disposals.
Dodoro said Essendon’s last premiership Coach would give strong consideration to unveiling Long in the Dreamtime match, but expects any potential elevation to be based on form.
“I know Sheeds would definitely do it,” Dodoro said.
“Regardless, Jake deserves to be considered, it’s a great story for a young man who has really improved and that’s the most important thing regardless of whose son he is.”
